Tilak Varma finally breaks silence on fading-light Super Over controversy in Sri Lanka

Tilak Varma has finally broken his silence on the Super Over controversy that created a lot of buzz during India A’s ongoing tour of Sri Lanka. The dramatic one-day match against Sri Lanka A ruled the headlines because of the Super Over in fading light and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s drama.

With many questioning whether the conditions were suitable for continuing the game, Tilak made it clear that his main focus was always on helping his team and getting a result in the crucial match. Tilak Varma also opened up about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the controversy.

Tilak Varma reveals leadership lessons

Currently, Tilak Varma is going through a big phase in his career, as he is not only leading India A but is also preparing for his new role as India’s T20I vice-captain. The left-handed batter said that this tour has taught him many lessons as a captain.

Since the India A squad was made up of players coming from different domestic teams and IPL franchises, one of his biggest jobs was to bring everyone together and build team spirit.

Tilak Varma was quoted as saying by Sportstar, “There have been a lot of learnings, especially around handling pressure. We came into this tournament as a group that hadn’t played together before. Everyone was coming from different teams and different IPL environments, and then suddenly they had to come together for India-A. What helped was that everyone has played enough domestic cricket.”

Tilak Varma explains his captaincy formula

The Hyderabad skipper explained that captaincy is not only about making decisions on the field. It is also about understanding players, knowing how they think under pressure, and helping them feel comfortable, and that’s why he is spending so much time with the India A players.

Tilak further added, “As a captain, the biggest learning for me has been understanding each player—how they react under pressure, what their mindset is, and how to get the best out of them. I spend a lot of time with players off the field because that helps me understand them better.”

The India A captain also shared that he has learned important leadership lessons by watching Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who scripted unique hat-trick in IND vs AFG 3rd ODI, over the years, both at the Mumbai Indians and Team India.

He added, “I know how important those relationships become when you’re out in the middle. I’ve tried to implement some of those things here, and it’s worked well so far.”

Tilak Varma breaks silence on Super Over controversy

Addressing the controversial Super Over, Tilak admitted that the conditions were not ideal when the extra overs were played. However, the India A captain explained that both teams had worked hard throughout the day and valuable points were at stake, everyone wanted to get the result.

He also clarified that India A was simply looking for clarity from the officials about the situation. There was no major argument from the team’s side despite all the drama surrounding the match.

Tilak said, “Honestly, if you look at that game, the light wasn’t ideal for a Super Over. But we had worked hard throughout the day and wanted a result because both teams were playing for two points. That’s all I was asking the umpires about. There wasn’t much argument from our side.”

Tilak Varma eyes strong finish in Sri Lanka

He admitted the pressure as a captain because of the legacy of the Indian team. Tilak also reflected on India’s performances during the ongoing one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka.

He said that India A played competitive cricket throughout the series, though some results, especially DLS, didn’t go their way. Tilak added, “We now have one game left (final). We’ll give it our best.”
