Australia’s captain Steven Smith won the toss and chose to bat first against India in the third Border-Gavaskar Test match in Ranchi. India must not lose the match in order to stay in contention for the trophy.

Australia gambled on Pat Cummins as the replacement for the injured Mitchell Starc, handing the New South Wales fast bowler a first Test appearance since his memorable debut against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2011. Glenn Maxwell returned to the Test team after another long absence in place of Mitchell Marsh, having last played in the UAE against Pakistan in late 2014.

India recalled M Vijay after he missed the Bengaluru match due to a shoulder injury, in the place of Abhinav Mukund, and retained Karun Nair rather than recalling the offspin of Jayant Yadav.

The pitch at Ranchi looks likely to be slow, low and taking spin from early on in the match
