Brendon McCullum has reinforced his desire to continue as the head coach of the England men’s side following their 160-run loss to New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge, which saw the Kiwis clinch a 2-1 series win to mark an emphatic end to the tour.
Under the stewardship of McCullum, England have now lost seven of their last nine Test matches, which includes a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Australia in the Ashes away from home. This is the Three Lions’ first series loss at home since 2012, despite which McCullum expressed his drive for continuing in the role.
“My enthusiasm for English cricket and my commitment to English cricket has never wavered. I’ve got a firm belief in the direction that this team can go. We still have an identity about us, but we want to continue to furnish and harness that, to get us in a direction that we are the team that we want to be, and that we want to represent for the people of this country.
The talent that sits within this country is immense. We just need to make sure we continue to give that opportunity, but still get results along the way,” McCullum told Sky Sports as quoted by Cricinfo.
Initially appointed as coach of the Test team, McCullum was handed an extension in 2024, taking charge across formats. His immediate focus shifts to the five-match T20I series against India, of which the first one is to be played on July 1 at Chester-Le Street. With the tight schedule in mind, he iterated that decisions and planning for that series will be done after assessing the workloads of the players. White-ball skipper Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell were seen practising with the white ball on the morning of the final day.
“You can’t do anything about the scheduling, it is what it is. You’ve just got to operate around it, and the good thing is we’ve got some good strong options within our squad. We look to Durham in two days’ time, and we look at the workloads that some of our boys have had in this Test, and you work out what’s the right balance, and how do you manufacture it? When we get up to Durham, we’ll make our plan, and we’ll look forward to the India series getting underway,” McCullum said.
Test skipper Ben Stokes, who has formed a highly talked-about partnership with McCullum, announced his retirement from international cricket on Day 4 of the match, marking an end to a remarkable career. He will continue playing beyond internationals.
