Ahmedabad and Kolkata to host IPL playoffs from May 24, final on May 29

The IPL playoffs – one eliminator, two qualifiers and the final – will be held in Kolkata and Ahmedabad between May 24 to May 29, the BCCI confirmed via a press release. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, Eden Gardens will play host to Qualifier 1 on May 24, followed by the Eliminator the next day, on May 25. Qualifier 2 will take place at Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad on May 27, with the final on May 29 at the same venue.

All the IPL 2022 league-stage games have been scheduled only in Maharashtra, with the BCCI being cautious owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The four grounds used for the IPL are Wankhede Stadium and Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, and the MCA Stadium in Pune. However, with the number of cases in India on the wane, the board has decided to branch out to other cities for the playoffs.

It was also confirmed that the IPL playoffs will be held in front of full-capacity crowds for the first time in two years. The IPL governing council had initially allowed a 25% capacity at the start, which was increased to 50% later on.

The BCCI also announced the schedule of the Women’s T20 Challenge, which will be played from May 23 to May 28 at the MCA Stadium, in Pune. The three-team women’s tournament was first held in 2018, in Mumbai and was played in Jaipur and Sharjah the following years. However, the tournament was cancelled last season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The three group games of the Women’s T20 Challenge will be held on May 23, 24 and 26, with the final on May 28. Trailblazers, Velocity and Supernovas are the three teams that have taken part in the competition. Supernovas took the trophy the first two years, while Trailblazers won the tournament in 2020.
