Broadcast and digital rights between 2023-27 up for grabs

Eyeing a windfall of close to INR 50,000 crore, the BCCI on Tuesday floated the media rights tender for the next five IPL seasons starting 2023. An e-auction will be held for the first time since IPL’s initiation to determine the new winner, board secretary Jay Shah said.

“With two new teams, more matches, more engagement, more venues, we are looking to take #TataIPL to newer and greater heights. I’ve no doubts that with this process there will not only be revenue maximisation but also value maximisation, which will benefit India Cricket immensely,” Shah wrote on Twitter.

Star are the current right holders, having paid the BCCI over INR 16,000 crores to win the rights for the five-year period ending with this season. Disney Plus Hostar, their OTT platform, currently holds the digital rights.

With the addition of two new teams that have led to an increase in total matches from 60 to 74 per season, the BCCI expects valuations to increase significantly.

Star are likely to face competition from Zee-Sony and Reliance Viacom 18 for the TV rights. Amazon Prime, Meta and YouTube and Disney Plus Hotstar are all in the fray for the digital rights.

Interested bidders can obtain the tender document upon paying a fee of INR 25 lakhs (excluding taxes). The Initial Tender Document (ITT) will be available for purchase until May 10.
