Mahmudullah 83* hauls Bangladesh to 513

Innings break Bangladesh 513 all out (Mominul 176, Mahmudullah 83*, Lakmal 3-68, Herath 3-150) v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s spinners claimed the wickets of Sunzamul Islam and Taijul Islam soon after the lunch break, but a 10th-wicket partnership worth 35 carried the hosts comfortably beyond 500.

It is Mahmudullah who has been the spine of this Bangladesh lower order on day two, and he who is most responsible for the valuable partnerships that take root when a collapse seems to have begun. Having ended the first session on 49, he completed his half-century first ball after lunch, only to soon watch Sunzamul stumped down the legside after missing a Sandakan googly, and Taijul bowled by a Herath ball that spun out of the rough.

With only the No. 11 Mustafizur Rahman for company, Mahmudullah played more aggressively than he had for much of his innings. Once, he ran at Lakshan Sandakan and would have been stumped had the wicketkeeper collected a wide ball cleanly (Sandakan had seen the batsman coming, and fired it way down the offside). Sandakan’s three next balls, however, all yielded boundaries for Mahmudullah, who lofted him twice in the arc between long on and midwicket. Somewhere during that salvo, Mahmudullah also completed 2000 Test runs. Mustafizur largely strove to defend, leaving the senior batsman to do the scoring, but he did muster one six of his own – a clean strike over long on, off Herath. Suranga Lakmal would soon dismiss him with a short ball, however, bringing the innings to a close with 513 on the board.
