Live scorecard and ball-by-ball details

The twilight session was better for Pakistan than the afternoon had been. They claimed three wickets in it, including Dimuth Karunaratne‘s scalp, and are now well into Sri Lanka’s long tail. However, they had ceded so much ground before tea, and on day one, that Sri Lanka have nevertheless marched on to an imposing score. One Test up, Sri Lanka have amassed 461 for 7. For Pakistan to square the series, a mountain must be scaled.

Sri Lanka’s biggest disappointment could be Karunaratne’s inability to bring up a maiden double ton, which would also have been the first for Sri Lanka since one-man double-ton factory Kumar Sangakkara retired. Having so fluently gathered his first 190 runs, Karunaratne found himself hemmed in as he approached the milestone – Wahab Riaz, getting a little reverse swing from the old, pink ball, and bowling particularly well to him during this period.

It was Wahab, in the end, who would dislodge him. Having failed to score off 14 of the 17 balls Wahab bowled to him after he got to 190, Karunaratne poked at a short delivery that came back slightly off the seam. The ball took his inside edge, clattered into his stumps. He was out for 196.
