With both sides grappling with middle-order issues, the trend of protecting the batsmen from crunch situations continued as Australia decided to bat again, though limited-overs cricket has become chase-friendly. Apart from a game involving Canada, teams chasing had won five out of the six ODIs in Nagpur.

The fifth ODI was a dead rubber but India needed to win it to keep their No. 1 ODI ranking. Perhaps that was the reason they went back to their frontline quicks after having tried Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami for just one match. The two best death bowlers in the world, according to Steven Smith, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, were in India’s XI.

Both sides had to contend with health issues. Kane Richardson was unwell, which opened the door for the under-pressure James Faulkner. Marcus Stoinis was cleared fit, and Travis Head kept his place ahead of Glenn Maxwell.

India had to do without the ill Yuzvendra Chahal, and Kuldeep Yadav slotted right back in. KL Rahul did not get a game in the entire series.
