Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first against West Indies at Warner Park in a bid to extend their winning streak in T20 cricket to 12 matches. They went in with three spinners in legspinner Rashid Khan and offspinner Mohammad Nabi, who had helped Sunrisers Hyderabad to the Eliminator in the IPL last month, and left-arm spinner Amir Hamza. Left-arm seamer Shapoor Zadran was the only fast-bowling option for the visitors.

West Indies, who had failed to qualify for the ongoing Champions Trophy in England, were without Kieron Pollard, who was down with a flu. They brought in a like-for-like replacement in Rovman Powell. The hosts played two spinners in legspinner Samuel Badree and offspinner Sunil Narine.
