David Warner‘s third half-century of the season paved the way for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s ten-wicket win over Gujarat Lions in Rajkot. Warner, who slammed 74 off 48 balls, combined with Shikhar Dhawan, who struck a fifty of his own, for an unbroken 137-run opening partnership after his bowlers, led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 4 for 29, kept Lions to 135 for 8.
Warner began the chase with two slashed fours off Dale Steyn, who replaced James Faulkner, and kicked into a higher gear with three fours off Praveen Kumar in the fourth over. Suresh Raina wasn’t spared either and was taken for back-to-back fours in his first over. Warner then brought up his half-century in the next over, off 29 balls. By then, Sunrisers had shaved 70 runs off the target.
Warner’s form meant that Dhawan had the luxury of biding his time to find his own form. He got into his groove in the 12th over when he paddled and drilled Dwayne Bravo for successive fours. He then unleashed a full-blooded cut in the 14th over, also Dhawal Kulkarni’s first over. From 25 off 24 balls, Dhawan motored to his half-century off 40 balls. Two balls later, he was left twirling his mustache, after Warner sealed the win with a late-cut four.
