Sri Lanka hand World T20 captaincy to Mathews

Angelo Mathews has replaced the injured Lasith Malinga as Sri Lanka’s ICC World Twenty20 captain.

Fast bowler Malinga is still recovering from a knee problem and is unlikely to be fit in time to begin the defence of Sri Lanka’s title on March 17.

Mathews, skipper of Sri Lanka’s Test and one-day international teams, will therefore take the reins in the sprint format too for the global tournament.

The change was confirmed when Sri Lanka Cricket announced a 15-man squad today, which saw Lahiru Thirimanne and Suranga Lakmal added at the expense of Niroshan Dickwella and Jeffrey Vandersay.

Sri Lanka squad: Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Shelan Jayasuriya, Milinda Siriwardena, Dasun Shanaka, Chamara Kapugedara, Nuwan Kulasekera, Dushmantha Chameera, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Rangana Herath, Lahiru Thirimanne, Suranga Lakmal.

All-rounder Angelo Mathews is now Sri Lanka's skipper in all three formats after replacing Lasith Malinga
