Sussex have named Keith Greenfield as their first director of cricket. Greenfield, who played for the club during the 1990s, steps up to the new role from his position as performance manager, taking on some of the responsibilities held by Mark Robinson, Sussex’s professional cricket manager until his appointment to coach England women last year.

Greenfield will oversee all aspects of the professional game at Sussex, including the club’s cricket strategy and coaching. Mark Davis, Robinson’s successor in charge of the first team, will be responsible for on-field performance and will report to Greenfield.

The promotion for Greenfield will see Carl Hopkinson step up from club coach to academy director, while continuing to assist the first team as a specialist fielding coach.

Sussex’s chief executive, Zac Toumazi, said: “I am delighted that Keith has accepted the role. We believe that he will bring his extensive experience in both professional and club cricket to drive improvements for Sussex cricket. His commitment and calm approach makes him the perfect candidate for this role which will focus on the implementation of the Sussex strategy to put cricket at the heart of our community.

“We are also thrilled to see Carl Hopkinson taking over from Keith to build on the excellent work he has done with the Academy. He can now bring his own style and expertise to help develop the next generation of Sussex’s players.”

Greenfield scored more than 7000 runs for Sussex in a 12-year playing career, featuring in 78 first-class and 160 List A matches. He became the club’s performance manager – which encompassed running the academy – in 2005, at the same time as Robinson succeeded Peter Moores as head coach.

In his new role, he will also work closely with Tim Shutt, managing director of the Sussex Cricket Foundation, to continue developments in participation and community cricket.

“I am hugely excited and feel very honoured to be offered this fantastic opportunity,” Greenfield said. “I am looking forward to working closely with Mark Davis and Tim Shutt on the wide range of opportunities we have to make a lasting difference to the quality delivered at all levels within the Sussex Cricket Strategy.”
