Agarkar: Dhoni still best at No. 6 for India

India’s captain MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first against Australia in the opening ODI of their five-match series at the WACA Ground in Perth.

Dhoni’s decision will pit India’s batsmen against a new-look Australian bowling line-up under cloudy skies and on a pitch showing some evidence of tackiness under foot.

Joel Paris and Scott Boland will make their international debuts, while James Faulkner returns to the Australian ODI team for the first time since he served a suspension for a drink driving offence while playing Twenty20 matches for Lancashire during last year’s northern summer.

Barinder Sran makes his debut for the visitors, who also included Bhuvneshwar Kumar in their bowling attack alongside R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

The hosts have lost Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc from the team that faced India in the World Cup semi-final in March last year.

Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 George Bailey, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 James Faulkner, 9 Scott Boland, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Joel Paris

India 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ajinkya Rahane, 5 Manish Pandey, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Barinder Sran
