Cook lauds Bairstow and Stokes heroics

Skipper Alastair Cook was keen to focus on the achievements of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow after England endured a nervy final day in the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Man-of-the-match Stokes smashed the fastest Test double-century by an England batsman, off 163 deliveries, during a world-record sixth-wicket stand of 399 with Bairstow, who completed an emotional maiden international ton.

Although the tourists struggled to capitalise on a first-innings score of 629 for six declared, Cook was keen to focus on positives from Newlands.

The opening batsman said: The partnership between Bluey and Stokesy, the 400 off about 300 balls, accelerated the game.

“It was an outstanding partnership and a pleasure and a privilege to watch it. It was an ‘I was there’ moment.

“That put us in the box seat, but full credit to South Africa. Led by Hashim (Amla), the 200 he got dragged them back into the game.”
