India A’s dramatic clash against Sri Lanka A in the Tri-Nation A Series ended in controversy as teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of an ugly on-field altercation after the match. The incident occurred moments after Sri Lanka A defeated India A in a tense Super Over at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Monday, June 15.
The match had already witnessed several controversial moments, including disputed umpiring decisions, fading light, and heated exchanges between players and officials. However, matters escalated further after the final ball of the Super Over, with videos of Vaibhav’s confrontation quickly going viral on social media.
India A flop badly in Super Over vs Sri Lanka A
The match finished in a tie after both teams posted 265 runs, forcing a Super Over under difficult light conditions in Dambulla.
Sri Lanka A batted first in the one-over eliminator and scored 16/0. The hosts benefitted from a controversial wide call before Avishka Fernando struck a crucial six off Arshad Khan. More drama followed on the final delivery when Fernando was caught off a waist-high full toss, but the delivery was ruled a no-ball, giving Sri Lanka A an extra ball and helping them finish with 16 runs.
Chasing 17 runs for victory, India A sent Suryansh Shedge and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to the crease. However, Kugathas Mathulan bowled an outstanding over and never allowed the batters to gain momentum.
Shedge managed only three runs from the first three deliveries, including a costly dot ball. Vaibhav then took strike and collected two runs before finding the boundary on the fifth ball. With eight runs needed off the final delivery, the youngster failed to connect with a yorker as India A finished on just 9/0 in the Super Over, handing Sri Lanka A victory.

Huge drama broke out in the India A-Sri Lanka A game at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, ending with 15-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi involved in a heated confrontation with Sri Lankan players after the Super Over defeat.
As soon as Sri Lanka A sealed victory, their players erupted in celebration. However, Vaibhav appeared visibly frustrated and exchanged words with Sri Lankan all-rounder Vishen Halambage. Television visuals and images circulating on social media showed both players standing face-to-face before teammates intervened.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was upset about something immediately after the match and became involved in an “argy-bargy” with one of the Sri Lankan fielders. Suryansh Shedge was seen dragging the young batter away from the confrontation, although Vaibhav continued exchanging words before the situation eventually calmed down.
Fortunately, the incident did not escalate further, and players from both teams later completed the customary handshakes.
India A fail to defend target
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka A posted 265/9 in their allotted 50 overs after opting to bat first. Sadeera Samarawickrama played the anchor’s role with a superb 93 off 113 balls, while Niroshan Dickwella contributed 37 and Avishka Fernando added a quickfire 22.
For India A, Arshad Khan was the standout bowler with figures of 1/36 from eight overs. Vipraj Nigam, Ayush Badoni and Suryansh Shedge also chipped in with wickets as the visitors kept Sri Lanka A within reach.
India A’s chase got off to a shaky start as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made 21 off just 14 deliveries, while captain Tilak Varma managed 23. At 143/7, the visitors appeared headed towards defeat.
However, Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam produced a remarkable rescue act. The duo stitched together a 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket, with Shedge smashing 72 off 66 balls and Nigam scoring 51 off 49 deliveries.
Their efforts helped India A level the scores at 265, but the visitors were ultimately left heartbroken after a controversial Super Over defeat, with the post-match altercation involving Vaibhav becoming the biggest talking point of the contest.
