Gavaskar also mentioned Sachin Tendulkar while describing the excitement and attention that the young batter is generating among cricket fans.
The Tilak Varma-led team is currently Sri Lanka A in the Tri-Nation A series final at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday, June 21. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka A chose to field first. Sooryavanshi made full use of the field restrictions and tore apart the Sri Lankan bowling attack with a stunning knock.

Sooryavanshi Hammers 94 Off 29, Misses Century by Six Runs
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi tore apart the Sri Lanka A bowling attack. He started aggressively and hammered 26 runs off Mohamed Shiraz in the third over of the match. The left-handed batter scored 94 off just 29 balls at a stunning strike rate of 324.14 and smashed 10 fours and eight sixes.
During his explosive knock, Vaibhav recorded the fastest half-century in List A cricket history, reaching the milestone in just 11 balls. He broke the previous world record held by Sri Lanka’s Kaushalya Weeraratne, who scored a 12-ball fifty in a domestic match during the 2005-06 season.
Vaibhav also broke the Indian List A record previously held by Sarfaraz Khan, who hit a 15-ball half-century for Mumbai against Punjab in the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He narrowly missed breaking the record for the fastest List A century, which is held by Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk, who reached the milestone in just 29 balls. Vaibhav was eventually dismissed for 94 off 29 balls in the ninth over after miscuing a delivery from Sahan Arachchige straight to Vijayakanth Viyaskanth.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Silences Critics With His Knock in Tri-Nation A Final
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi entered the final under pressure after a string of modest scores and a heated altercation with Sri Lanka A players earlier in the tournament. Before the final in Dambulla, Vaibhav had scored 14, 44, 21, and 38 in the tournament.
The national selectors have already shown faith in Vaibhav’s talent. At 15 years and 71 days, he became the youngest player ever selected for the India men’s team, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record.
He recently earned his maiden T20I call-up for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games. After the tri-series final, Vaibhav and captain Tilak Varma will travel to Ireland for a T20I series before heading to England for five T20Is.
