Huge blow! India captain suffers knee injury, new captain announced

Amid the ongoing series against the Aussies, which marks a preparatory phase for the high-stakes ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tournament to be held in England in 2026, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has sustained a massive injury scare that might have a toll on her chances for the World Cup as well.

Indian women are currently on their tour to Australia and are playing a twin three-match white-ball series against the most successful team in the history of Women’s World Cups. After a successful T20I leg of the series, where India secured a 2-1 victory over the giants of the game, they are now in for the ODIs.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s massive injury scare amid India vs Australia game

India opted to bat first after Harmanpreet won the toss against the Aussies. This marks the final series for Alyssa Healy, the Australia captain, before she calls quits on her international career. Also, this is the first time India is playing against Australia after having won the World Cup in 2025.

While Harmanpreet Kaur was batting during the first innings, she injured her left knee with a massive blow. She has not taken the field during the second innings, and the BCCI Medical team is currently monitoring her, as revealed by the updates on the BCCI Women’s official X page.

“Captain Harmanpreet Kaur has not taken the field in the second innings after sustaining an injury to her left knee while batting. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring her progress. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is leading the side in her absence,” BCCI stated.
