
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint against an unofficial Facebook page and a sports media platform for allegedly spreading false information. The complaint came after the published fake social media posts claiming that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had conducted a raid at his residence.
Ganguly lodged the complaint at Thakurpukur Police Station in Kolkata on Saturday, June 15. The complaint names the Facebook page “Sourav Ganguly Fans” and sports website Sportzwiki. Following the complaint, police authorities launched an investigation into the matter and are examining the source of the posts.
Sourav Ganguly Denies Fabricated Enforcement Directorate Raid Claims
Sourav Ganguly has denied reports claiming that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid at his residence. He described the posts as false and misleading and said they were harmful to his reputation and public image.
According to a report by India Today, the viral post detailed an enforcement action that never took place. Ganguly rejected the claims and filed a police complaint, following which authorities began investigating the source of the misleading content.
Before retiring from international cricket in 2008, Ganguly scored 11,363 runs in 311 ODIs at an average of 41.02 and registered 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries during his 16-year international career.
Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar Take Action Against Digital Misinformation
Former India captains Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar have taken legal action against the misuse of their names and images online. Both cricket legends have raised concerns about digital impersonation and the unauthorized use of their identities on various platforms.
In 2023, Tendulkar filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police Crime Branch over misleading online advertisements that allegedly used his name and image without permission. The Mumbai Police Cyber Cell registered a case under Sections 420, 465, and 500 of the Indian Penal Code and launched an investigation.
Gavaskar also approached the Delhi High Court to protect his personality rights from unauthorized use. The court directed major digital platforms, including Google, Meta, and X, to remove infringing content and take action against fabricated posts.
Sourav Ganguly Helped Rebuild Indian Cricket During a Challenging Period
Sourav Ganguly took charge of the Indian team during a difficult period. He focused on building a fearless and competitive culture. He backed young players, encouraged an aggressive approach, and helped restore confidence in Indian cricket after the match-fixing controversies of the late 1990s.
Ganguly scored 7,212 runs in 113 Test matches at an average of 42.17. The left-handed batter registered 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries before moving into administrative and broadcasting roles after retirement.
After becoming a regular member of the Indian team in 1996, Ganguly led India to the final of the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy. He later served as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2019 to 2022.
Ganguly announced himself on the international stage with a century on his Test debut against England at Lord’s. He followed it with another hundred in the same series, becoming one of the few players to score centuries in each of their first two Test innings.
