The flop show of Sanju Samson and the Indian cricket team against Ireland could open the door for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his debut for the senior cricket team.
After the 0-2 defeat against Ireland in Belfast, the Indian cricket team will face England for a multi-format white-ball series. Should the Indian team management play Vaibhav Sooryavanshi against England? Since the first match in Belfast against Ireland, the question never goes out of context.
Expectations are high for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
As the openers of the team, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, especially Sanju, who was dismissed cheaply in both of the matches of the 2-match T20I series against Ireland, some of the cricket experts urged the team management to trust on the 15-year-old batter.
After all the carnage the emerging batter made in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) with the Rajasthan Royals, expectations are high on him. The India vs Ireland series got hype mostly because of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Like the cricket fans, the pundits are also eagerly waiting to see the batter in action during the tour.
The team management, led by the head coach Gautam Gambhir, will have to decide on the team combination with logic, rather than being influenced by emotions. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opines on whether the team should allow Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make his T20I debut against England in England.
Should India allow Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to play in the England series?
Ravichandran Ashwin says that it will be a very risky decision if the team asks the young talent to play under the English conditions. Traditionally, the pitches and circumstances in England are now truly suitable for the batter.
In the recent past, when England was against New Zealand for a Test match at Lord’s, it was a galore of wickets as pacers from both sides were taking wickets at a fluent rate. If Vaibhav Sooryavanshi comes to bat and fails to fulfil the expectations, he may have to hear a lot of criticism.
Everything gets reversed: Ravichandran Ashwin
For a 15-year-old, a series of criticisms can be very impactful on his career. Ravichandran Ashwin believes Vaibhav should spend time with the team to gather more knowledge about the game, which will help him in the near future.
“Will this be reversed? In all honesty, everything gets reversed, isn’t it? Everyone will start saying that you can beat Vaibhav Suryavanshi in IPL. You don’t know how to play in such seaming conditions, sporting conditions. In such conditions, you are Vaibhav, you are Abhishek, you are Sanju. In the templates of T20, if you play the same, there are chances of getting out,” R Ashwin says.
“That is why I said, sitting outside in the team environment and watching the bats is not such a bad thing. You are learning from somebody else’s experience. You go and ask anyone. In the world, the most valuable and free lessons are when you learn from the mistakes of high-performing individuals in close quarters. You won’t get a better platform than that,” he added.
🔴 IF VAIBHAV FAILED ON THIS PITCH, EVERYONE WOULD WRITTEN HIM OFF 🤯
Ashwin🎙️: If Vaibhav Suryavanshi had played on these challenging wickets & failed, people would have immediately said he can only perform on flat IPL pitches.
