Who is Abishek Porel? Delhi Capitals star in news after serious allegations

Delhi Capitals (DC) wicketkeeper-batter and Bengal’s rising star Abishek Porel has found himself in the middle of the shocking controversy. The 23-year-old is now facing serious allegations after an FIR was filed against him at the Mogra Police Station in Hooghly, West Bengal.

A medical student from Karnataka has accused Porel of having a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage before allegedly refusing to marry her.

Who is Abishek Porel?

Abishek Porel hails from Chandannagar in West Bengal, India. Born on October 17, 2002, he is a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter and is known for his attacking batting style and smart wicketkeeping skills.

He comes from a family where cricket has already made its place. His cousin, Ishan Porel, is a well-known fast bowler in domestic cricket and the IPL. Abishek started his training at the National Gems School academy in Chandannagar before shifting to Kolkata for better training.

The left-hander played Under-16 and Under-19 cricket for Bengal and impressed everyone with his fearless batting. His strong performances at the junior level helped him earn a place in Bengal’s senior team in 2022. Since then, Abishek represents Bengal in first-class, List A, and T20 cricket.

He is also part of the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Recently, the 23-year-old, who is regarded as one of Bengal’s brightest talents, represented Lux Shyam Kolkata Tigers in the Bengal Pro T20 League.

Domestic Cricket Career with Bengal & IPL Career Stats

Abishek Porel has impressed everyone with his attacking batting and dependable wicketkeeping in both domestic cricket and the IPL. Since making his senior debut for Bengal in 2022, Porel has played an important role across all formats.

In first-class cricket, the left-handed batter has scored over 1,400 runs with the help of a century and 12 half-centuries. One of his best performances came when he scored 114 against Chandigarh. He has also more than 120 dismissals to his name.

He has been really impressive in List A cricket, where he averages nearly 44. Porel turned heads with a stunning unbeaten 170 against Delhi during the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Porel has so far scored over 1,500 runs in the T20s at a strike rate above 150.

Abishek made his IPL debut in 2023 when Delhi Capitals signed him as a replacement for injured Rishabh Pant. This changed everything for him despite playing only a few matches in that season. The 2024 season proved to be his breakthrough year.

He impressed everyone with his aggressive batting as an impact player and scored 327 runs during the IPL 2024 season and became a key player for the Delhi Capitals. Before the mega auction in 2025, DC retained Abishek for ₹4 crore, and he repaid the faith by scoring over 300 runs in 2025. However, the Bengal star got to play only four matches in IPL 2026, and he managed 108 runs for DC.

Why is Abishek Porel in the News?

Abishek Porel has landed himself in a legal controversy after a woman filed a police case against him in West Bengal. The complaint was filed at Mogra Police Station in Hooghly district by a medical student from Karnataka and her mother.

The woman has alleged that she and Porel were involved in the physical relationship for around three and a half years and that the two had planned to get married. According to the complaint, Porel later refused to marry that medical student despite allegedly promising marriage earlier.

The woman has accused the cricketer of having a sexual relationship with her on the false promise of marriage. She has also accused Porel of assault and criminal intimidation. Based on these allegations, the Mogra Police have registered an FIR against Porel and started an investigation into the matter.

According to the media reports, the Hooghly Rural Police have begun collecting evidence and recording statements as part of the inquiry. The allegations against Porel are currently being investigated, and further action will depend on the findings of the police investigation.

What Has Abishek Porel Said About The Matter?

Abishek Porel has strongly denied all the allegations made against him and has called the allegations of assault and exploitation mentioned in the FIR completely false.

Not just that, Porel even mentioned that she made the fake allegations to ruin his reputation because of his growing popularity and recent performances on the field.

Porel stated, “I am playing well now, so various things are coming up.” The Bengal wicketkeeper-batter also revealed that he had not been directly contacted by the Hooghly Rural Police when he first responded to the allegations.

However, Porel stated that he is ready to fully cooperate with the investigation and follow the legal process. He stressed that he would present his side of the story at the appropriate time.

He added, “I will talk about this when the police investigate… I will respond in detail after the police complete their initial inquiry.”

What’s Next for Abishek Porel?

With the FIR now registered against Abishek Porel, his career is at stake. The next step is likely to be Porel involving himself in the police inquiry, and he is expected to give his detailed statement soon. He is currently in Bengaluru with his family and is already ready to cooperate with the investigation.

Senior police officials in Hooghly are investigating the allegations and are also expected to review any evidence that may be available as part of the probe.

Meanwhile, Porel’s legal team could approach the court for anticipatory bail or other legal relief if they continue to maintain that the allegations against him are false.

For now, Porel’s career is safe, and the young wicketkeeper-batter is expected to continue representing Bengal in domestic cricket during the upcoming season. So, Delhi Capitals and the BCCI are likely to wait for the outcome of the police investigation before considering any further steps.
