Rohit Sharma's 2027 World Cup chances become clearer amid Afghanistan series

Rohit Sharma’s chances to feature in the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027 are still unknown. Ahead of the tournament, there are plenty of times left for the national team selectors to pick the names for the tournament.

After India’s first match of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in Dharamshala, Wasim Jaffer opined on Rohit Sharma’s future with the Indian cricket team. The opener was dismissed early in the match because of a miscommunication with Shubman Gill.

Rohit Sharma’s focus will be on the 2027 World Cup: Wasim Jaffer

Despite the underwhelming knock against Afghanistan, Wasim Jaffer believes, the 39-year-old opener will leave no stone unturned as the ODI World Cup Trophy is something which he has yet to lift.

“I think Rohit Sharma is still playing and has made himself available. So I am sure his focus will be on the 2027 World Cup. From Rohit Sharma’s perspective, I don’t think there is any doubt about that. Now it depends on the coaches and selectors. But I think seeing Rohit Sharma still playing and making himself available since he is currently playing only this format, if he is playing, then I am sure his focus will be on the 2027 World Cup,” Wasim Jaffer said in his YouTube channel ‘Wasim Jaffer Official’.

Jaffer raises questions over Rohit’s recent form

Jaffer has some doubts over Rohit Sharma’s recent form, but he does not doubt the experience and credibility the former India captain offers to the team. As there are a lot of days before the ODI World Cup, it will be too early to make any comment on the availability of the opener for the flagship tournament. The former batter mentions that Rohit’s chances in the 2027 ODI World Cup will be purely dependent on the selectors’ and the coach’s opinion.

“Rohit’s form is a bit indifferent at the moment, but as I said, we cannot question his credibility because of the experience he brings. Now it depends on what the selectors and coaches think. But Rohit Sharma’s experience and his temperament in big matches cannot be doubted. And if he is making himself available, I am sure he will not leave any stone unturned so that he can play the 2027 World Cup. His effort will be to lift that World Cup trophy, something he missed out on in 2023. So I am sure he is working towards that,” he added.

Jaffer asks Team India to play Yashasvi Jaiswal

Wasim Jaffer shows his support to Yashasvi Jaiswal as well, who has played only a few matches for India in ODIs, but has a good track record. The former opener suggests that the Indian team management include Yashasvi Jaiswal in the playing eleven for the third match of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, if India wraps up the series in the second match.

I think Yashasvi scored a century in the last match in ODIs. So if India wins this series in the next match, I feel, I think it is a three-match series, if I am not wrong. So I feel Yashasvi might get a chance to play there, and he should be given an opportunity because I think we need to prepare a backup as well,” Wasim Jaffer suggested.
