Former Nottinghamshire bowler and Australia international Ben Hilfenhaus has announced his retirement from first class cricket.
The 32-year-old, who has confirmed he will continue to play Twenty20, claimed health reasons were behind the decision, announced at a press conference on Wednesday.
Hilfenhaus, quoted by Cricket Tasmania, said: “I feel like I have been blessed and honoured to represent Tasmania and Australia. It was a childhood dream and I’m very grateful.”
The right-arm paceman played a total of 104 first class matches. He took 99 wickets in 27 Tests, making his debut in 2009 against South Africa.
However, Hilfenhaus has not worn the baggy green since since Australia faced Sri Lanka in Hobart more than three years ago – and has struggled recently with hamstring issues.
Hilfenhaus was signed up by Nottinghamshire for the 2015 season, but was forced to end his stint early due to a hip injury after playing three County Championship games and four NatWest T20 Blast games.
Arguably one of the highlights of his career, Hilfenhaus finished as the leading wicket taker at the 2009 Ashes, and also excelled against India in a 4-0 series win in 2011-12 when he claimed 27 wickets which included two five-fors.
