A firm century by Daniel Hughes and a dogged contribution from Ben Rohrer drove New South Wales to 5 for 284 against Western Australia in the day-night Sheffield Shield match at the WACA Ground.

The Blues, who went into the match without the opener Ed Cowan following a heavy blow to his helmet in the previous round, lost Nick Larkin in the third over of the day but Hughes and Kurtis Patterson blunted the new ball in a sturdy partnership of 118 before Rohrer accompanied Hughes through to his century and the 200.

Hughes, who struck 20 fours, was eventually teased out by the spin of Ashton Agar, and the loss of an established batsman just a few overs before the second new ball was due under lights could have been a dangerous juncture for the visitors.

However Rohrer endured, accompanied for 55 runs by Ryan Carters and then, for the closing moments of the night, by Steve O’Keefe, who was returning to the NSW XI after injury.
