Luke Sugg and Matt Dean posted an England VI record third-wicket partnership total of 294 on the way to a 2-0 ODI series lead against Australia.
The hosts won the toss with captain Matthew McCarthy opting to send England into bat as they looked to level the series.
McCarthy’s side started strongly and delivered a few early body blows to take two wickets in the first over as Pete Blueitt and Justin Hollingsworth both went for a duck.
T20 captain Luke Sugg then joined ODI skipper Dean and they proceeded to build from the rocky start.
The strong and steady pair notched up centuries within two balls of each other during their time at the crease, as their 294-run stand overtook the 257 scored by Sugg and Hollingsworth against Australia in 2014 in the record books.
The fruitful partnership ended when Sugg was dismissed lbw for 119 in the 36th over by Daniel Pritchard, who proved to be the dangerman of the Australian bowling attack.
Following Sugg’s dismissal, wickets feel quickly and cheaply with Si Ledwith, Dan Field and Mark Turnham all out for only nine runs.
Dean was eventually bowled by Pritchard in the 38th over for 116 and England reached the end of their 40 overs on 317 for seven.
Pritchard was the standout performer for Australia, taking five wickets for 40.
Ed Hossell started off England’s innings with some lucky fielding when, off his own bowling, he dropped a catch which freakishly flew back and hit the stumps to run out the batsman.
Not long after Hossell’s lucky break, he was also responsible for running out Michael Zannis to leave Australia on 45 for two off 4.3 overs.
England’s bowling was tight throughout the innings and their fielding outstanding, with a total of seven run-outs.
Impressive performances from Hassan Khan (B1), wicket-keeper Dan Field, Ed Hossell (B3), Rob Comber (B2) and Pete Blueitt (B1) helped to seal the win, with Blueitt bowling a career best to take the final wicket and finish on figures of two for 53 off 7.5 overs.
Speaking about his record-breaking efforts, man-of-the-match Sugg said: “It was a tough game today, and to go out there and perform the way I did, along with Deano, was fantastic.
“Deano played fantastically and really helped me to bat the way that I did. I was able to take my time and relax, and then really push on towards the end.
“It was a privilege once again to score runs for my country, and a shout out goes to Dan Pritchard, who took five wickets today – it goes to show the competition we were up against,” added Sugg.
“I’d also like to thank everyone back home for all their messages of support and to all those that have stayed up and listened to us play. It’s much appreciated by all the team.”
