Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first in the fifth ODI, perhaps owing to a preference to chase – their better performances through the limited-overs series having come when batting second. AB de Villiers said South Africa would have bowled first as well, as he felt the track would to speed up in the second innings.
Seam bowler Suranga Lakmal and legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay came into the Sri Lanka XI as the visitors attempted to prevent a 5-0 whitewash. Nuwan Kulasekara and left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan made way, after both were expensive in the previous game.
South Africa have also made two changes to their attack, leaving out their own left-arm wrist-spin bowler, Tabraiz Shamsi, and omitting seamer Dwayne Pretorius as well. Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris returned to the team.
There is a small chance of thunderstorms in Centurion during the afternoon, though the toss was conducted in bright sunlight.
