South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first, with AB de Villiers suggesting there might be something in the pitch for the new-ball bowlers. This was despite South Africa having scored more than 300 on each of the previous six occasions they have batted first at the Wanderers.
Farhaan Behardien entered the hosts’ XI in place of the injured David Miller, but fast bowler Wayne Parnell was also replaced with right-arm seam bowler Dwaine Pretorius, who plays his fourth ODI.
Two debutants will take the field for Sri Lanka, meanwhile. Seam-bowling allrounder Lahiru Madushanka will play his first international, and 19-year-old quick Lahiru Kumara will make his limited-overs entrance after having made a promising start in Tests over the past two months. They took the places of seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekara and left-arm spinning allrounder Chaturanga de Silva.
South Africa were wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The weather is expected to remain good for the duration of the game.
