Australia’s stand-in captain Aaron Finch won the toss and sent New Zealand in to bat in the first Chappell-Hadlee ODI match at Eden Park in Auckland.
The visitors were forced into a hurried reshuffle on match morning, with Finch taking over leadership from Matthew Wade after Steven Smith and his deputy David Warner both missed the tour.
Wade was ruled out due to a back complaint he reported on match eve. His absence meant Pete Handscomb will take the gloves, and also that the young Queensland batsman Sam Heazlett will make his debut in the middle order. Heazlett was included in the squad without having played a single domestic limited overs match for his state and is listed to bat at No. 7.
New Zealand favoured Lochie Ferguson over Matt Henry in their XI, which also featured Tom Latham sharing wicketkeeping and opening duties.
New Zealand 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Tom Latham (wk), 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Neil Broom, 6 Colin Munro, 7 James Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Lockie Ferguson, 11 Trent Boult.
Australia 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Travis Head, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Pete Handscomb (wk), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Sam Heazlett, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Pat Cummins, 11 Josh Hazlewood.
