Australia’s captain Steven Smith won the toss and chose to bat first against Pakistan in the first day-night Test at the Gabba.

The hosts retained Nathan Lyon despite widespread speculation over his spot on match eve, meaning Chadd Sayers remains 12th man, as he was in the third Test against South Africa in Adelaide. The team was unchanged from that match, meaning the debutants Matt Renshaw, Pete Handscomb and Nic Maddinson all hang onto their spots.

Pakistan welcomed back legspinner Yasir Shah alongside captain Misbah-ul-Haq – both missed their recent loss in New Zealand.

Australia have never lost a home series to Pakistan.

The Gabba pitch looks dry and thinly grassed, with the curator Kevin Mitchell junior shaving far more from the surface than his Adelaide counterpart Damian Hough did for the first two day-night Tests played down under.
