The opening game of the Bangladesh Premier League 2016-17 became the tournament’s first to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. Persistent rain meant not even a toss was possible and the two teams – defending champions Comilla Victorians and Rajshahi Kings – had to settle for one point each after the umpires called the game off at 4.50 pm.

The umpires called the game off at 4:50pm with the whole Shere Bangla National Stadium under covers on top of which rain fell steadily since ten minutes before the start of play, at 2:20pm.

Unseasonable showers, caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, had been affecting Dhaka and different parts of the country over the past 24 hours. There were three hours on Friday morning when the weather was clear, but it turned sour 10 minutes before the start of play and did not relent.

The second match, between Khulna Titans and Rangpur Riders, is scheduled to begin at 7:15 pm at the same venue but rain is a threat to that game too.
