The incident occurred in the seventh over of Bangladesh’s innings while Naseem was fielding at fine leg off the bowling of Shaheen Afridi. Mohammad Naim flicked the delivery off his pads to the fine leg boundary, and Naseem put in a full-length dive to his left before clutching his arm in pain. He lay prone on the ground for several minutes while the physio assisted him, after which he was led off the field. Mohammad Haris came in as a substitute for Naseem.
Naseem is currently being assessed to ascertain the extent of the damage, and the precise location of an injury, if any. It comes at an inopportune time for Pakistan, with their next clash against India in Colombo on Saturday as the Asia Cup enters its business end in Sri Lanka. With the ODI World Cup also around the corner, any doubts over the fitness of one of Pakistan’s premier fast bowlers could unsettle their plans.
Until the injury, Naseem had opened the bowling alongside Shaheen Afridi, taking one wicket for 22 runs in three overs, dismissing Mehidy Hasan Miraz with his first ball of the match.
Any decision on Naseem’s further involvement in the tournament will have to be made relatively quickly, with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka all leaving Lahore for Colombo on the same chartered flight on Thursday. The remainder of the tournament will be held in the Sri Lankan capital, which was confirmed as the host last evening after several days of uncertainty.
