South Africa opener Quinton de Kock has announced a sudden retirement from ODIs which will be effective after the upcoming World Cup in India in October-November. De Kock’s retirement was announced minutes after Cricket South Africa (CSA) named him in the World Cup squad of 15, which will be led by Temba Bavuma.
De Kock, 30, was rested from the recently-concluded T20I series against Australia which South Africa lost 3-0. He Kock last played Major League Cricket (MLC) in July for runners-up Seattle Orcas. He has played 140 ODIs so far for 5966 runs at an average of 44.85 with 17 centuries and 29 half-centuries.
De Kock had announced a sudden retirement from Tests as well, in December 2021, when he had said he wanted “to spend more time with his growing family”.
De Kock’s availability for South Africa had become an issue after he signed up for the BBL in Australia, for Melbourne Renegades. It appeared that de Kock was likely to make himself unavailable for the home white-ball series against India this December, which would clash with the BBL running from December 10 to January 5.
