Shreyas Iyer ruled out of first Australia Test

Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia starting February 9 in Nagpur. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that Iyer, who returned to Bengaluru on Wednesday to get fitness clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), was told he would need to spend more time in rehab to recover from the back injury, which had recently ruled him out of the ODIs against New Zealand.

Extending Iyer’s rehab, it is learnt, is more of a precautionary step taken by the BCCI medical staff. He is expected to join the India squad for the second Test, which starts in Delhi from February 17.

Iyer had returned home to Mumbai after undergoing rehab at the NCA for more than week. Iyer, who played in the two-Test series in Bangladesh in December, had a swelling in his lower back for which he was given an injection at the NCA. He was originally expected to travel to Nagpur from Bengaluru to join the India squad for the preparatory camp starting on February 2.

Iyer was part of the 17-man squad named for the first two Australia Tests. Iyer was one of the contenders for a middle-order specialist batter’s slot along with the pair of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, depending on who will open with captain Rohit Sharma.

India’s Test squad for the first two Tests against Australia: Rohit Sharma (capt), KL Rahul (vice-capt), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Suryakumar Yadav
