Chandimal picked for South Africa Tests pending ICC hearing

Dinesh Chandimal has been named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the series against South Africa, even though he is unlikely to play the whole series owing to the disciplinary charges and probable suspension hanging over his head.

Chandimal, along with coach Chandika Hathurusingha, has pleaded guilty to a level three spirit of cricket offence, over their roles in delaying the start of play for almost two hours on day three of the St Lucia Test amid a ball-tampering row. Although Sri Lanka will plead for leniency for Chandimal, the minimum punishment for this offence is suspension from two Tests. The hearing is due to be held on July 10 – two days before the start of the first Test.

Squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera (subject to fitness), Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Rangana Herath (subject to fitness), Suranga Lakmal (vice capt), Dilruwan Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Lahiru Kumara, Lakshan Sandakan, Kasun Rajitha
