New Zealand’s best Test batsman Kane Williamson brightened up a gloomy afternoon in Auckland with his 18th Test hundred, passing Martin Crowe and Ross Taylor to become the country’s leading century-maker. Rain then scuppered the rest of the first session with only 10 overs bowled.
Williamson added nine runs to his overnight score of 91, getting to the landmark with a trademark glide towards gully. It was slow progress for New Zealand, with England relying on control ahead of the second new ball. Henry Nicholls and Williamson added 22 runs in 10 overs, stretching New Zealand’s lead to 139, only venturing into an attacking shot if the bowlers erred in their areas.
Heavy rain 40 minutes into play forced an early tea break – 30 minutes ahead of schedule – but there was forecast for more rain through the afternoon.
