Cook wary of South Africa backlash
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first on a cloudy morning in Nottingham. England captain Joe Root admitted he would have chosen to bowl first had he won the toss.
With Kagiso Rabada suspended, South Africa have brought in Duanne Olivier for his second Test, while Faf du Plessis returns to lead after having returning to South Africa for the birth of his child. He replaces the dropped JP Duminy. Bowling all-rounder Chris Morris came in place of batting all-rounder Theunis de Bruyn.
England, who won the first Test at Lord’s by 211 runs, are unchanged. That gives James Anderson a chance to add to his tally of 53 Test wickets at Trent Bridge; nobody has claimed more.
The game is being played on the same surface used for the 2015 Ashes Test when Australia were bowled out for 60 by lunch.
While the sun broke through the clouds just as the toss was taken, dark clouds liber around the ground suggesting a possibility of rain later.
