‘I’m a proper allrounder’ – Pandya

Jason Holder won his fifth toss of the series and decided to do what he did in their only win: bat first. There were two views of the Sabina Park pitch: it was hard and should be the quickest pitch of the series, which means it should be the best batting surface, but there were also cracks on the pitch, which could open up later in the day.

Both the sides were unchanged. You could understand West Indies didn’t want to change their winning combination, but Virat Kohli offered an interesting reason for sticking with the changed XI that lost the last match. Kohli said they had decided even before the previous ODI that the XI playing that match would play both the last matches no matter the results.

Another way of looking at it is that it was decided with six days to go in the series that Rishabh Pant, the exciting new talent, was not going to get an ODI on his first tour, no matter the results. And that R Ashwin, who had just started hitting his rhythm, was not going to get a chance of building on it, no matter how Ravindra Jadeja bowled.

India 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli (capt.), 4 Dinesh Karthik, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Umesh Yadav
