The board had announced recently that Bangladeshi coaches could also apply for the role, with only Mizanur Rahman Babul reportedly applying for the position.
“I am honoured to commit to the Bangladesh National Team. The depth and array of talent running through Bangladesh is exceptional and I believe we have some exciting years ahead of us,” said Pothas.
The 49-year-old has previously been the interim head coach of West Indies and Sri Lanka in the last six years. His last role was as Hampshire’s wicketkeeping coach. Pothas represented South Africa in three ODIs in 2000 and played 218 first-class matches, 236 50-over games and 79 T20s until 2011.
He joins Chandika Hathurusinghe (head coach), Allan Donald (pace-bowling coach), Rangana Herath (spin-bowling coach), Jamie Siddons (batting coach) and Shane McDermott (fielding coach) in the Bangladesh support staff.
