Domingo and Langeveldt miss Gqeberha Test because of ill-health

Russell Domingo, Bangladesh’s head coach, has not been present at his home Test in Gqeberha as he battles an illness that has kept him away from his team. A team source confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Domingo has been resting at home and is in good spirits, and has also been in regular contact with the team during the match. Bangladesh are hopeful Domingo will recover and join the squad before the conclusion of the match.

The rest of Bangladesh’s coaching staff, including bowling coach Allan Donald, batting coach Jamie Siddons and spin-bowling coach Rangana Herath, have been leading the team in drills through the Test and have been notable presences in the changeroom balcony and in the dressing room.

South Africa are also without a member of their coaching staff. Bowling coach Charl Langeveldt tested positive for Covid-19 before this Test and, in keeping with pandemic protocols, was released from the tour group to self-isolate.

Langeveldt opted to return to his home in Cape Town and was accompanied by security manager Zunaid Wadee, who drove with him from Gqeberha. The pair was involved in a car accident and while full details of the incident are awaited, insiders have confirmed Langeveldt and Wadee are both safe and well.

As a result of the “soft bubble” conditions under which this series is being played, and changes to the close-contact rules in South Africa, there was no need for anyone who was in contact with Langeveldt or Wadee to isolate.

This is the second time Langeveldt has been absent from national duties because of Covid-19. He missed last year’s white-ball tour to Sri Lanka after testing positive within the then-required 21-day period that the Sri Lankan government required visitors to have been Covid-free for before entering the country.
