Marcus Stoinis is out of Wednesday’s World Cup match against Pakistan with a side strain, and is a risk for the whole tournament. Mitchell Marsh, who was supposed to tour England with the Australia A team, has been flown in early as cover. A final decision on Stoinis’ future in the World Cup will be made after he is assessed again in the lead-up to Australia’s next game, against Sri Lanka on Saturday at The Oval.
The tricky part is to assess how long Stoinis will be out for. If a replacement is approved for a player, he can’t come back into the tournament. Now, in the absence of a like-for-like allrounder in the squad, Australia will have to decide if they can do without Stoinis for the period it takes for him to recover.
