A half-century by Rory Burns was tempered for England by two wickets as West Indies remained firmly in control of the first Test in Barbados.
Burns played a controlled innings to reach 84 off 133 deliveries before he was out on the last ball before lunch. Jonny Bairstow remained not out at the break on 29 with England 134 for 2, still trailing by 493 runs.
England resumed on 56 for 0 after a wicketless third day at Kensington Oval. But West Indies captain Jason Holder, whose unbeaten 202 propelled his side to a mammoth lead, grabbed another piece of the action in the morning session when he had a hand in dismissing England opener Keaton Jennings.
After his bowlers Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach failed to make inroads, Holder brought Alzarri Joseph into the attack with immediate effect.
In his first over of the day, Joseph tempted Jennings to slash a thick outside edge towards Holder, who jumped to his left at second slip with arms raised and pulled the ball down, ending Jennings’ stay at the crease after 84 balls that yielded just 14 runs.
Holder, who was entitled to feel fatigued from batting through most of the previous day, then brought himself into the bowling attack for an economical four-over spell before turning again to Roach, the architect of England’s first-innings collapse.
West Indies wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, who had batted alongside Holder throughout for an unbeaten 116, was suffering some back soreness and did not take to the field in the morning, with Shai Hope taking his place behind the stumps.
Holder brought on Roston Chase as the lunch break neared and again the change of bowlers delivered the breakthrough. Bowling round the wicket, Chase pinned Burns down with a ball that slid inside his defensive push to hit off stump.
