To win the Test and level the series, West Indies need 444 runs – a target the likes of which has never before been achieved in Tests. Alternatively they must bat out over two days for a draw, after Kane Williamson declared New Zealand’s second innings at 291 for 8, with 12 overs still remaining on the third day.

Chief among the batsmen driving the hosts forward was Ross Taylor, who with his 17th Test ton, equaled the New Zealand record for number of hundreds, jointly held by Kane Williamson and Taylor’s mentor Martin Crowe.

His 107 not out was a measured innings. There were few square-of-the-wicket assaults, or bludgeoned sweeps off the spinners. Taylor strove instead to accumulate his runs, building New Zealand’s lead as teammates kept falling at the other end.

The visitors were good with the ball in patches, Miguel Cummins and Shannon Gabriel running hot at various points through the day. But they were so far back in the game already, New Zealand had the match in a stranglehold throughout. Cummins took 3 for 69 from 17 overs, while Gabriel claimed 2 for 52. Offspinner Roston Chase also took two wickets.
