Sri Lanka bowl first; Shreyas Iyer given ODI cap

Toss: Sri Lanka chose to bowl v India

Both teams got their desired result at the toss as Sri Lanka’s new ODI captain Thisara Perera chose to bowl first against India in Dharamsala. India’s stand-in captain Rohit Sharma said he would have batted with a “good pitch and the sun shining nice and bright.”

Shreyas Iyer was given his ODI cap, and slotted into the No. 3 spot vacated by Virat Kohli, who is resting for the remainder of Sri Lanka’s tour. India also preferred two wristspinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal over Axar Patel’s fingerspin. Ajinkya Rahane, coming into this series with just 17 runs in five innings in the Tests, was left out.

For Sri Lanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Angelo Mathews and Asela Gunaratne returned to the XI from their previous assignment against Pakistan in the UAE. Like India, Sri Lanka chose two fast bowlers, two spinners and a seam-bowling allrounder. Sri Lanka have won just four ODIs in 26 games in 2017, and have been whitewashed in a five-match series three times this year.
