David Warner’s second hundred in as many innings was offset by his wicket plus those of Peter Handscomb and Hilton Cartwright as Bangladesh sought to restrict Australia’s lead on day three in Chittagong.
After rain washed out the whole of the first session and reduced the day to a minimum of 67 overs, Handscomb and Warner took their stand to 152 before the younger man was run out by a Shakib Al Hasan direct hit when trying to find the single to take the vice-captain to three figures.
Becalmed on 99 for some minutes, Warner eventually found a way to reach the milestone, as he continued to correct a previously poor record in Asian Test matches. But he appeared to tire after spending the entirety of the match so far in the field, and offered a half-pull shot at Mustafizur Rahman to be caught by a juggling Soumya Sarkar at leg gully.
Glenn Maxwell, who was dropped at gully off Mustafizur before Warner’s exit, and Cartwright then formed the foundations of a positive stand, as both eyed potentially a single position in the Australian batting order at No. 6 in the forthcoming home Ashes series.
However, Cartwright was beaten more than once by Mehidy Hasan’s subtle variations and snicked another such delivery to slip on the stroke of tea. This was some source of revenge for Mehidy after play was held up by his recovery from a fierce blow to his thumb and ribs when Cartwright hammered back a straight drive.
