Sri Lanka have the best part of two full days to bat out to save the Galle Test, or an improbable 550 to chase, after India declared their second innings 5.3 overs into the fourth morning, which began 15 minutes early to make up for overs lost to rain on the day three. India clattered 51 in that time, with Virat Kohli, who resumed on 76, bringing up his 17th Test hundred and 10th as captain.

Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane hit only two fours and a six in that time, but scored off all but seven balls they faced, against Sri Lanka’s deep-set fields.

Sri Lanka successfully chased down a target of 388 in their last Test match, but it came against a weak Zimbabwe attack. A target of 550 against India represents a task of an entirely different magnitude.
