Sri Lanka conceded a 10-run lead to Zimbabwe, after their three final wickets fell for the addition of 53 runs on day three. The hosts spent 19.3 overs at the crease in the morning, but were largely hesitant to look for boundary options, partly because Zimbabwe used a spread field for set batsman Asela Gunaratne.

Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer claimed the two final wickets to finish with innings figures of 5 for 125 – his first five-wicket haul in Tests. Although the ball was only two overs old at the start of the day, Cremer and left-arm spinner Sean Williams bowled in tandem through the entirety of Sri Lanka’s day three stay.
