A career-best unbeaten 151 from Craig Ervine held a resurgent Zimbabwe together on the first day at the Premadasa Stadium, lifting them from a shaky 70 for 4 to a stumps total of 344 for 8. It was the most they had ever scored in a single day’s play, against anyone, and it was also, already, their highest total in Sri Lanka, going past the 338 they posted in Kandy 19 years ago.

If the Test remained in the balance in good batting conditions, it was down to that man Rangana Herath, who set off early trouble in Zimbabwe’s innings with the wickets of both their openers, and kept asking questions through the day to finish with figures of 4 for 106.
