Faf du Plessis will miss the opening Test against England at Lord’s to remain with his wife after the “difficult” birth of their first child. Dean Elgar will stand in as captain, leading South Africa for the first time.
A decision will need to be made whether Theunis de Bruyn or the uncapped Aiden Markram replace du Plessis in the middle order with de Bruyn, who made his debut against New Zealand in Hamilton, probably the favourite having played the warm-up match against England Lions
