Asghar Stanikzai called correctly as Afghanistan elected to bat in the first of three ODIs against West Indies in St Lucia.

West Indies, looking for a batting lift and to recover from their Champions Trophy non-qualification, handed a debut to Roston Chase, the Barbados batsman, who has already nailed a permanent place in the Test squad. Rovman Powell, the allrounder, and Devendra Bishoo, the legspinner, were the ones to miss the cut from the 13-man squad.

Afghanistan, whitewashed by West Indies in the three T20Is earlier this week, would look to draw inspiration from their previous ODI assignment, when they beat Ireland in a five-match series.

Mohammad Shahzad’s absence because of a doping violation meant an opportunity for Rahmat Shah, who made an unbeaten hundred in his previous ODI innings, to make a mark at the top of the order.

Afghanistan: 1 Noor Ali Zadran, 2 Rahmat Shah, 3 Javed Ahmadi, 4 Asghar Stanikzai (capt), 5 Mohammad Nabi, 6 Samiullah Shenwari 7 Gulbadin Naib, 8 Dawlat Zadran, 9 Afsar Zazai (wk), 10 Amir Hamza, 11 Rashid Khan

West Indies: 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Jason Mohammed, 4 Shai Hope (wk), 5 Roston Chase, 6 Alzarri Joseph, 7 Jonathan Carter, 8 Jason Holder (capt), 9 Miguel Cummins, 10 Ashley Nurse, 11 Shannon Gabriel
