Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and chose to bowl on a green pitch, and under cloudy skies, at the Oval. Virat Kohli said he would have preferred to bowl as well, in order to exploit the swing and seam that may be on offer.
With Mathews returning to the ODI side after a nine-month injury-related hiatus, Sri Lanka found its middle order strengthened, though they have to make do without Chamara Kapugedara, whose knee injury ruled him out of the tournament on Wednesday.
Opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka, who had been on stand-by in the UK, walked into the squad and then straight into the XI. He replaced Upul Tharanga, who was suspended for two games for maintaining a slow over-rate in Sri Lanka’s last match. There was one more change with seam-bowling allrounder Thisara Perera took the place of spin-bowling allrounder Seekkuge Prasanna.
India, meanwhile, have chosen to play the same XI that defeated Pakistan, leaving R Ashwin out, thanks largely to the conditions.
Though it is expected to be cloudy through the day, there is no forecast for rain.
