Zaheer Khan, the Delhi Daredevils captain, elected to bat in their first home game on what he thought was a dry Feroz Shah Kotla surface. Shreyas Iyer, who missed the first two games because of a bout of chicken pox, was back in at the expense of Aditya Tare, his state captain.

Glenn Maxwell, the Kings XI Punjab captain, said he would’ve bowled first anyway. England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan replaced Marcus Stoinis, who made a 11-ball 9 and bowled just 1.3 overs in their loss to Kolkata Knight Riders two nights ago. KC Cariappa, the offspinner, was expected to complement Axar Patel in the spin department after being brought in for Ishant Sharma.

Kings XI Punjab lead the head-to-head that stands at 10-8 at this stage, but Delhi have won three of the four games the two sides have played since 2015.

Delhi have played the least among all sides in the competition so far, having won one – by 97 runs over Rising Pune Supergiant – out of their two games.
